FIA-president Jean Todt straft Sebastian Vettel niet: "Op een exceptionele basis..."

De FIA neemt geen verdere actie en volgen er geen sancties naar aanleiding van de scheldpartij van Sebastian Vettel op de boordradio tijdens de Formule 1 Grand Prix van Mexico. Zo werd er richting collega F1-coureur Max Verstappen en tegen wedstrijdleider Charlie Whiting ‘Fuck Off’ gescholden. Waar menig kenner in de paddock een zware straf had verwacht voor de Formule 1-coureur, besloot voormalig Ferrari-teambaas en huidig FIA-president Jean Todt geen verdere actie te ondernemen tegen Ferrari-coureur Sebastian Vettel..

“Op een exceptionele basis, wordt er geen disciplinaire actie ondernomen”, zo besloot de Fransman, nadat Sebastian Vettel zijn excuses aan Charlie Whiting had aangeboden. De reden voor de reactie van de Duitser was dat het besluit om Max Verstappen hem te laten passeren niet direct werd genomen, maar pas na de wedstrijd. De Red Bull-coureur werd gestraft met vijf seconden, waardoor Sebastian Vettel naar plek 3 ging. De Ferrari-coureur ging echter zelf in de fout met Daniel Ricciardo en blokte de sympathiek Australiër. Waarna de viervoudig wereldkampioen op basis van de kersverse ‘Verstappen-regel’ werd gestraft met 10 seconden. Hierdoor viel de coureur alsnog terug naar de vijfde positie.

Jean Todt vroeg na de stewards na de wedstrijd om een rapport van de beledigingen van Sebastian Vettel aan het adres van Charlie Whiting. De Brit is naast wedstrijdleider ook het FIA technisch hoofd en een hooggewaardeerd persoon in de paddock.

At the recent Mexican Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel made comments over team radio using repeated foul language directed at both the FIA Formula 1 Race Director Charlie Whiting and a fellow competitor which were retransmitted during the live broadcast of the event.

Immediately following this incident, Sebastian Vettel spontaneously sought out Charlie Whiting to express his regrets for his behaviour in person. He then, again on his own initiative, sent letters to each of the FIA President Jean Todt and Charlie Whiting, in which he apologised profusely for his actions.

He also indicated that he would likewise be contacting Max Verstappen and vowed that such an incident would never occur again.

In the light of this sincere apology and strong commitment, the FIA President has decided, on an exceptional basis, not to take disciplinary action against Mr Vettel by bringing this matter before the FIA International Tribunal.

The FIA will always condemn the use of offensive language in motor sport – especially when directed at officials and/or fellow participants – and expects all participants in its Championships to be respectful and mindful of the example they set for the public and the younger generation in particular.

The FIA takes this opportunity to advise that, in the event of any future incident similar to the one that occurred in Mexico, disciplinary action will be taken by bringing such incident before the FIA International Tribunal to be judged.
